Configuring LDAP

Question:
How do I configure LDAP to work with the XCN Server

Answer:
The XCN Server supports LDAP in that it will authenticate username and passwords to your LDAP Server. The information below will help you configure the XCN Server interface to your LDAP.

We do require that you first load the XCN Server with your various usernames/passwords. There is in import function located from the 'users' link.

All LDAP servers are supported. No schema extension is required. Each time a user attempts to login, the server will do a login request to LDAP as that user to check credentials. This provides the ability for the user to only
have to update their password in one place. Since the Xchange Network Server still maintains it's own list of users, there is no issue with having a different number of users in LDAP then using XC Connect/XC Vault.

We also assume that you are familiar with LDAP.

To configure the XCN Server for your LDAP server please:

1. Access the XCN Server Administration screen,
- select the 'configuration' link,
- select 'LDAP configuration' link.
2. Select the box labeled "use LDAP for user authentication"
3. LDAP server: enter the location of your LDAP server
4. LDAP port: enter the port that you are using for your LDAP server
5. LDAP base DN: enter the distinguished name of the entry to that
directory. (This DN identifies the entry that is to be the starting point of the search. If this is empty (ldap:///) the search will start at the root of the tree.)

To test the above entries, select the box labeled "test ldap configuration with the credentials below ". This will allow the XCN Server to attempt to authenticate to the LDAP server as the user specified with the "test CN" and "test password" (described below). If successful the LDAP setting will be
saved.

1. test CN: enter the common name of a user that exists within the LDAP directory. An example would be: cn=Users, uid=test. Please do not include the server DN from above as that will be added automatically.

2. test password: enter the password that corresponds to the LDAP common name specified above.

Please note that the only way the XCN Server knows that a given user is associated with a specific LDAP user is the "common name".

The only extra step that is required for a LDAP change is for your users to login via the web interface one time after they have changed their LDAP password. The easiest way to have them do that is to select 'Manage Personal Data Sharing' from the connector options menu. This will take them to the Administration page in new browser window, and as long as the connector password is correct, will log them in automatically updating the server's cache of the LDAP password.
