Why can't I connect to the XCN Server via the host name? |

If you are having trouble with a client recognizing the server and you are using the server host computer name as opposed to an IP address or a domain name that has a registered DNS or an entry in your "hosts" file, then you might want to check that you have NetBEUI installed as a Network Protocol.
Using the server host computer name on all the clients is common in a DHCP environment where the server has a dynamic IP address and all the clients and server are behind the same router providing DHCP services.
For this to work you must have NetBEUI Protocol installed. To check you have to look at your Network Card Properties screen. One way to find it is to right click your mouse over the My Network Places icon on your desktop and choose properties. This will open the Network and Dial-up Connections screen. Then right click your mouse over your Network Card entry on the Network Card entry and choose properties.
This will open your Network Card Properties screen. On the General tab you should have both and NetBEUI Protocol and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) entries and they both should have check marks in the corresponding boxes. If NetBEUI Protocol does not exist, then you can install it by clicking the Install button and choosing the Protocol entry and press the Add key.
This will open the Select Network Protocol screen. Choose Microsoft from the Manufacturers list and then choose NetBIOS from the Network Protocol screen and press OK.
After installation you will be required to reboot your computer.
NOTE: To access a server from a client outside the DHCP environment where the server resides, the server must have at least one fixed IP address. This IP address can for a registered domain or you can use the computer name by placing an entry in the "hosts" file on the client. Often the hosts file is in C:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc\hosts and the entry should look something like this:
68.40.85.10 servername |
